The working memory model Flashcards
Define the working memory model
A representation of STM is a dynamic processor of different types of information using sub-units coordinated by a central decision making system
What is the central executive?
Coordinates the activities of the three slave systems in memory
What is the phonological loop?
Processes information in term of sound.
What two components is the phonological loop split into?
The Phonological store and the Articulatory process
What is the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Processes visual and spatial information in a mental space (The inner eye)
What is the episodic buffer?
Brings together material from other subsystems in a single memory rather than separate strands
What is one key feature of the central executive?
Very limited processing capacity
What does the phonological store do?
Stores words you hear
What does the articulatory process do?
Allows maintenance rehearsal to keep information in working memory while they are needed
What is the capacity of the articulatory process?
2 seconds of what you can say
What did Logie divide the visuo-spatial sketchpad into?
The visual cache - Stores visual data
The inner scribe - Records the arrangements of objects in a visual field
What capacity does the episodic buffer have?
Four chunks
