the working memory model Flashcards
who proposed this?
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
what does this entail
its an explanation of short term memory: how its organised and functions
- concerned with mental space like when were working with a maths problem.
explain the different parts of the WMM
- central executive
- phonological loop
- visuo-spatial sketchpad
episodic buffer
explain the central executive
has a supervisory role
- monitors incoming data
- focusses and divides limited attention
- allocates subsystems to tasks
explain the phonological loop
what is it subdivided into
-is one of the subsystems
- deals with auditory information
coding in acoustic
- preserves order which info arrives
sub divided into:
phonological store- stores words u hear
articulatory process- allows maintenance rehearsal to keep them in working memory. Capacity is 2 seconds worth of what u say.
explain visuo-spatial sketchpad
stores visual and/or spatial info
limited capacity- 3-4 objects (baddeley 2003)
what is the visuo spatial sketchpad subdiveded into and who proposed this
visual cache- stores visual data
inner scribe- records arrangement of objects in the visual field
discovered by Logie (1995)
evaluate the working memory model
clinical evidence (strength)
- from Shallice and Warrington’s (1970) case study of KF
- had poor STM ability for auditory info but could process visual info normally
- immediate recall of letters and digits was better when he read them visually than when they were read to him (acoustically)
- KF’s phonological loop was damaged but his visuo-spatial sketchpad was still intact
COUNTER- its unclear whether KF had cognitive impairments. The trauma involved from a motorcycle accident may have affected his cognitive performance.
