Q

explain the research of effects of similarity

who discovered this

A

in both PI and RI interference is worse when the memories are similar

discovered by McGeoch and McDonald (1931)

Q

explain the procedure on research on the effects of similarity

A

studied retroactive interference by changing the amount of similarity between two sets of material
- participants had to learnt a list of 10 words until they could remember them with 100% accuracy. they then learnt a new list

6 groups of participants who had to learn different types of new lists

  1. synonyms
    2, antonyms
  2. words related to original ones
    4.consonant syllables
  3. 3-digit numbers
  4. no new list- control group

Q

explain the findings and conclusions

A

when the participants were asked to recall the original list of words, the most similar material produced the worst recall- shows interference is strongest when the memories are similar

Q

evaluate explanations for forgetting- interference

A

real-world interference (strength)
- there is interference in everyday situations
- Baddeley and Hitch (1977) asked rugby players to recall the names of teams they played against during a rugby season. Found players who played the most games had the poorest recall and increased validity.
