The Working Memory Model Flashcards
Who developed the working memory model
Baddley and hitch
What is the working memory model
A model for how stm is stored and its functions
What are the 4 components of the wmm
Central executive
Phonological loop
Visio spatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer
What is the central executive
Supervisory role
Monitors data and divides attention
Limited processing capacity
Doesn’t store info
What is the phonological loop
Deals with auditory information
Subdivisions - phonological stores what you hear
And articulatory process allows maintenance rehearsal
What is the Visio spatial sketchpad (includes visual cache and inner scribe)
Stores visual and spatial information
Capacity of 3/4 objects
Visual cache - stores visual data
Inner scribe - arrangement of objects in the visual field
What is the episodic buffer
Temporary storage information for CE
Intergrates visual spatial sketchpad and verbal info
Capacity of 4 chunks
Links working memory to long term memory
What are the 2 strengths of the WMM
Clinical evidence - KF study (poor stm for auditory info but good for visual Info , however may have had other brain issues)
Dual task performance - studies of dual tasks show when doing a visual and verbal task they can but can’t do 2 visual tasks and fights for the same store
What is a limitation if the WMM
Lack of clarity over the nature of the CE
Baddley stresses importance of it whereas it’s not specified enough so lacks integrity
