the working memory model Flashcards
who studied the working memory model?
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
what is the working memory model?
the ‘mental space’ that is active when, for example, working on a maths problem or playing chess
central executive
supervisory role- allocates slave systems and has limited storage capacity
phonological loop
auditory information and preserves the order of info
- phonological store- stores words you hear
- articulatory process- allows maintenance rehearsal
visuo-spatial sketchpad
visual cache and inner scribe (visual or spatial info)
episodic buffer
integrates processing of slave systems and maintains sequencing
links to LTM
one strength of the working memory model
- support from clinical evidence
- Shallice and Warrington (1970) - patient KF who had a brain injury
- STM for auditory information was poor but could process visual info
one limitation of the working memory model
- lack of clarity over the central executive
- Baddeley said the CE was the most important but the least understood
- more to the CE than attention
