How was the windrush generation able to immigrate to England?
As many islands in the Carribean Sea(known as the West Indies) had aided Britain to win WW2,though once the fight had ended Jamaica was devastated with a hurricane in 1944.With low economy and no tourist industry,the Carribeans decided to move to the mother country,Britain!
When did the Windrush generation arrive in Britain and how many people were on board?
22nd June 1948 with 492 people(mostly men)
Why did people in the West Indies choose Britain?
The West Indies chose Britain because during 1948,Parliament passed the British Nationality Act meaning that all the people in the British Empire(the Commonwealth) were British passport holders and were allowed to live as well as work in Britain.So if you have never been to Britain although you are a part of the British Empire,you were legally allowed to travel there which is why the West Indies saw this as an oppurtunity
Did the British welcome the Windrush Immigrants?
The British did not welcome the Windrush Immigrants and the problem even went onto newspaper headlines talking about ‘colour problems’
Did the West Indians get the jobs they wanted?
Whatever the qualifications they had,most West Indians were working in low-paid jobs like cleaners,ticket collecters just because of the colour of their skin
What happened in Notting Hill with the West Indians?
In 1958 in Nottingham and in Notting Hill,there were several weeks of violence against the black youths with the white youths attacking them
What was occuring around the 1950s and 60s with the West Indians?
They were getting a high amount of racial tension with ‘mixed relationships’ so a white women with a black man and vice versa
What did the West Indies do despite the descrimination?
The West Indies still decided to make Britain their home despite the low payment with jobs,poor housing and discrimination
