The Whole Healthy Person Flashcards
Define health in the context of osteopathic medicine.
Health is the adaptive and optimal attainment of physical, mental, spiritual well-being.
Define disease in context of OM
The absence of well-being of body, mind, spirit.
Relate levels of organization in the human body to the four tenets of OM
The body is just one piece of a person. Treat the body as well as the mind and spirit of a patient. By healing a patient we also affect the community that the person is a part of.
Articulate and illustrate traditional historic and contemporary perspective of osteopathic patient care.
Traditional/historic- focus on disease rather than ease thus just pushes death along in time
Contemporary- focus on staying healthy and thus increases quality of life. We recognize health before we recognize the disease.
What are four tenets of OM?
- ) Person composed of body mind and soul
- ) Body is capable of self-healing, self-regulation and self-maintenance
- ) Structure relates to function
- ) Rational treatment based on understanding of all other three OM tenets
