Q

Black Kettle signed a treaty with the U.S. government. Early in the morning before sunrise, Chivington supplied members of the Colorado Territory militia with whiskey for warmth and attacked Black Kettle’s camp. Many of the young warriors were away from camp hunting. Chivington’s men massacred all in the camp. Scalps and various body parts of the victims were taken by members of the militia as trophies. Chivington claimed he defeated 500 warriors on the warpath instead of 100-200 old men, women, and children. He was called a hero by U.S. newspapers.
