A

doctors sign an oath to that they care for whoever and whatever - e.g. Martin Bryant murdered people but doctors still had to care for him

The History of the welfare state and caring for others

A
  • started as monasteries and abbeys providing care, these places became a safe place for beggars however Henry Viii implemented a reformation which made that system of health care collapse in England
  • in the Middle ages churches took in widows and spinsters with wealth as nuns
  • 1601 Elizabethan Poor law act set up a welfare state system paid for by a tax and administered by the Parish - this lasted until the population BOOm in C19th
  • In scandanavia the Lutheran parishes were directed by the king to provide education, support and record data
  • Everyone who was born into a parish was given the right to be looked after the parish
  • New poor law
  • armhouses were set up where the unable bodied poor were taken care of
  • able bodied poor were to be sent to the house of correction
  • the idle poor were to be set to work in a house of industry
  • pauper children would become apprentices
  • this all erupted in 1788 and shaped society
  • state library of victoria emerged in the 1850s - free so poor people could go and visit
  • a radical sub culture emerged in the 1850s which believed in liberty and freedom
  • Common wealth conciliation and arbitration commission in 1907 was set up for a legal fair and reasonable basic wage for a human being
  • late 1930s there was an increase in professionalism
  • oil crisis in the 1970s made the rich refuse to pay for others less deserving than themselves

define welfare state

A

a system whereby the state undertakes to protect the health and well-being of its citizens, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and other benefits. The foundations for the modern welfare state in the UK were laid by the Beveridge Report of 1942; proposals such as the establishment of a National Health Service and the National Insurance Scheme were implemented by the Labour administration in 1948.
