So what does the government do?

A
  • education
  • health promotion/advertising
  • regulations of food and beverage e.g. increase sugar tax
  • Julia Gillards government taxed alcohol heavily
  • economic policy to reduce price of fresh food at the expense of fast food
  • In Australia the Greens called for a 20% sugar tax on drinks in June 2016 they estimated they would collect 500 million dollars a year

What are some objections to this?

A
  • interferring with an individuals choice is morally wrong
  • taking on food chains such as McDonalds is foolish - employment - the younger generation won’t agree (Tecoma incident)
  • Tony Abbott rejected the proposal to implement a ban on junk food ad during children TV in 2005

Why is McDonalds being blamed?

A
  • increasing obesity
  • food is high in fructose
  • largest chain - so lots of people eat from it

  • The McLibel case in the Uk - David Morris and Helen Steele protested against them, McDonalds went on to sue them in 1990. In 1999 Court of Appeal reduced found for McDonalds success as they did find their food could be harmful - McDonalds improved their food
