The Weight of the Nation (Film) Flashcards
Bogalusa Heart Study
One of the longest ongoing studies in Bogalusa Louisiana that investigates the genesis of CVD from childhood to adulthood. Discovered that heart disease begins in childhood
Ideal cardiovascular health
The seven criteria for ideal cardiovascular health:
1. Optimal cholesterol
2. Normal blood pressure
3. Not having diabetes
4. Lean body mass index
5. Not being a smoker
6. Physical activity
7. Healthy diet
NIH study on weight loss
Examined the mechanism in people who gain weight while obese, by adding 1000 calories to their regular diet for 6-8 weeks.
Prediabetic: a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type II diabetes
Type I diabetes
A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
Type II diabetes
A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose). The body may be producing a lot of insulin, but it is also resistant to it, thus unable to convert sugar.
What is the relationship between diabetes and obesity?
Diabetes follows obesity. Obesity causes high blood pressure, high sugar levels, and insulin resistance, which causes Type II Diabetes
Aside from the health concerns, why is diabetes being a direct effect of obesity urgent to treat?
While a lot of people are diagnosed with diabetes, there is still a percentage of people who are not diagnosed with diabetes
What are some of the costs of obesity aside from adverse health outcomes?
- someone who is obese costs more money to care for
- obesity leads to issues in the economy, and employees are not sure if they can keep some of their workers
- issues occur in the communities and families
- functionality issues, as there are less people who can perform labor-intensive jobs such as firefighters or who can enlist in the military
Gene-Environment Interaction
When both genetic and environmental factors play a role in disease development.
Obesity is a classic example, as an individual’s body weight is a result of their genetic makeup as well as the environment they happen to live in; nature and nurture combined
Plaque
Fats, cholesterol, and other substances that build on artery walls and cause thm to narrow, clogging blood flow
Cirrhosis
A condition in which the liver becomes scarred and stiff, can be caused by obesity when fat becomes stuck between the cells of the liver.
