The Water Cycle Flashcards
What are Earth’s 4 major stores of water?
-Hydrospheric water (oceanic water and terrestrial water)
-Lithosphere
-Atmospheric water
-Cryospheric water
Define hydrospheric water
A continuous layer of water at or near the Earth’s surface, liquid and frozen water, groundwater and atmospheric water vapour
Info about atmospheric water
-Store varies in size
-10 degrees rise in temp atmosphere could hold 2x amount of water = positive feedback as more water vapour means higher temperatures
Info about cryospheric water
-Ice sheets, ice shelves, glaciers, permafrost, sea ice
-99% of all freshwater is in Ice sheets.
-Antarctic ice sheet contains 30 million Km3 of ice! About size of Mexico and USA
-Ground at 0 degrees or below for 2 consecutive years
Info about terrestrial water
-Groundwater, biological water, soil water, wetlands, lakes, rivers
-Rivers are a small percentage of water 0.0002%
- largest river– 1/5 world’s total river flow!
-Wetland is area of marsh, fen, peatland which has water that is static or flowing with a
dominance of veg
