What conventions does The Voice website use?
Front pages uses a grid layout. Banner shows areas of the websites such as Sport and Culture, most of these are conventional. Uses headlines and images to illustrate stories. Links lead to stories. Layout for full stories has image repeated at the top, story is reported in a single column, space on the right of the page for links to other stories and advertising and comments can be left at the bottom.
What is unconventional?
One of the areas of the website is ‘faith’. Not usually done, but reflecting the websites target audience focuses on black British community members, for example in a sports team.
What are the images linked to?
Tend to be promotional or stock images rather than original illustrations. Many images are sourced from image agencies and some will have been provided as part of a PR service.
What are the traditional sources of news?
News Agencies, Official information, Reporting journalism, Investigative journalism, Press releases from press offices and PR companies.
What are news agencies?
International companies who receive information on current events from around the world and then distribute the information to news organisations.
What is official information?
Politicians and other official organisations send newsrooms information on forthcoming events, speeches etc. Newsrooms may choose to send a reporter to gather information for a story or they may use official press releases to construct a story.
What is investigative journalism?
Journalists will use research and sources to search for stories that may not be clearly identified in the public sphere. A recent investigation identified financial connections between a data collection company (Cambridge Analytica), a social media company (Facebook) and political campaigns for both Donald Trump and Brexit.
What are Press releases?
Press releases present stories to newsrooms. Press offices and PR companies represent the interests of their clients and so press releases present information representing the client in the best possible way. Ideally a release would be a starting point for a reporter who would investigate and then write the story based on a more objective perspective on the story.

Citizen Journalism, Social Media, Direct use of press releases, Churnalism
What is citizen journalism?
News sourced by amateurs who are witnesses to events who may provide images and videos.
What effect has social media had on the stories reported?
Much news now reflects the talking points and trending stories on social media. Articles often use posts, images, videos from social as part of their content.
What is direct use of press releases?
Articles are often provided on press releases and have been written by press offices and PR companies. It it not uncommon for press releases to be used word for word without any journalistic input into the story.
What is churnalism?
A term used to refer to the practice of reporting on what other media outlets are reporting on. Interviews in magazines and events from TV programmes are often used by other media outlets and presented as news stories.
What is the style and tone of a tabloid newspaper?
Tend to be sensationalist when they present stories. Use emotive language and write headlines that intend to shock or surprise the reader. A successful tabloid story has made the reader laugh or shocked or angered them.
How does a paper do it’s ideological stance?
Starts from the editor. Some paper are specifically supportive of a party (Telegraph and The Sun back Conservatives) whereas some take a position on issues based on a broader perspective (The Guardian is socially left-wing but does not fully support Labour).
