The village: The stabbing scene Flashcards
The doors in the centre
we have primed to recognise that anything placed centrally will soon be unbalanced so when we see Lucius we want to make him aware.
Trust.
Noah’s hair is being tugged by the wind (symbolising his emotional termoil). Lucius trusts noah and he even reassures him.
The stabbing.
When lucius reassures noah his face is close up like we are looking at him. Shock fills his eyes when he looks down. An overhead shot shows that Noah has driven a blade into lucius’ belly, as if he could drive out his emotional pain by inflicting it onto another
the aftermath 2
the noise of the wind and the thudding sound as noah repeatedly stabs his fallen friend fills the screen with emotional distress: Lucius in danger and Noah in this emotional void.
The wood burning
The camera moves to the right and zooms in on a wood-burning stove, and the cold noise of the wind increases, symbolising the warmth leaving his body, creating sadness.
the rocking chair
Borrowed from Hitchcock. symbolises domestic life. Noah’s act has put the dream of Ivy and Lucius having a family in mortal danger. The idea is more clear when we later see noah, incoherent with grief, rocking himself in a chair with the ‘bad colour’ smeared all over the culprits hands.
