the vestibular system Flashcards
where does this sensation come from
inner ear and limbswaj
what is this sensation
balance and spatial orientation
semicircular canals in ear
contain endolymph that shifts to detect direction of head movement and strength of head rotation
otolithic organs
utricle and sacculeh
what do the ortholithic organs do
detect linear acceleartiona nd ehad positing using calcium carbonate crystals attached o hair cells
how does this contribute to dizziness and vertigo
endolymph doesnt stop spinning when we do, continuous moving, get feeling of dizziness
signal detection theory
refers to how we make a decision under conditions of uncertainty (how we discern between important stimuli and unimportant noise)
what are the options in response to a signal I signal detection thoery
- hit (subject responds affirmative when signal present)
- false alarm (subject a perceives a signal when it is not present)
- correct rejection (a correctt neg answer for no signal)
- miss (negative response to a present signal)
conservative strategy
always say no unless 100% sure that signal is there (misses might occur)
liberals strategy
always say yes even if there are some false alarms
