What is the Second Vatican Council?
A
This was when Pope John XXIII called 2,000-2,500 bishops to 4 sessions at St Peter’s Basilica between 1962-1965.
16 documents in total came out of the Second Vatican Council, laying a foundation for the Church as we know it today.

What is the Lumen Gentium.
A
- Means “Light of the Nation”
- It states that priests are servants and must look after the spiritual needs of their parishioners.
- Church is the “body of Christ” so people must take part in running the parishes.

What is the Dei Verbum?
A
- Means “Word of God”.
- States that the word of God is through scripture and should be studied by priests.
- “Ignorance of scriptures is ignorance of Christ” therefore Catholics read the Bible and apply its teachings.

What is the Gaudium et Spes?
A
- Means “Joy and Hope”
- Tackles how the church itself changes in an ever changing world.
- Christians must recognise every persons right to culture and it’s benefits.

What is Sacrosanctum Concilium?
A
- Means “Sacred Liturgy”
Key Principle : Liturgy is full of signs and symbols and it is pointless if people don’t understand them. Churches should be simple and understandable, rather than mysterious.
