What is the magisterium.
This is when the pope and the bishops act as interpreters of the Bible and the Tradition.
What is Ordinary Magisterium?
Define: Popes and bishops write letters to their diocese.
Role: To encourage faith, clarify a point of faith or give instructions.
Quote: “Society must respect, defend the dignity of every human.
Example: Evangeline Vitae(gospel of life) which explains the Catholic Churches responses to modern issues that affect the sanctity of life.
What is Extraordinary Magisterium?
Define: When the bishops are asked to sit in a general council. Bigger form of ordinary Magisterium.
Role: To explore significant issues in the life of the church
Example: The first council decided what practices new converts to Christianity should follow. Recorded in the Bible.
Quote: “We should won’t make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God” - Acts15: 19-20
What is Pontifical Magisterium?
The belief that all the authority given to St.Peter gets passed down from Pope to Pope, this includes declaring a teaching which are infallible.
Example: In 1854 Pope Piux IX declared the doctrine of the immaculate conception of Mary.
What is Conciliar Magisterium?
They help the Pope to make important decisions that affect the rest of the Church. This Council is important as they allow the Pope to understand the feelings of the whole Catholic Community.
