The Vascular System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Vascular System?
- Provides a route for blood to travel from the heart to nourish the various tissues of the body
- Carries cellular waste to excretory organs
- Allows lymphatic flow to drain tissue fluid back into the circulation
- Returns blood to the heart for recirculation
What systems make up the Vascular System?
Arterial and Venous System
Arterial System
Blood moves from the larger arteries to a network of smaller blood vessels called arterioles, which meet the capillary bed
Venous System
Blood travels from the capillaries to the venues and to the larger system of veins, eventually returning in the vena cava to the heart for circulation
What is the primary function of the arterial system?
Deliver oxygen and nutrients to various tissue on the body
What three mechanisms mediate and regulate BP?
- The autonomic nervous system
- The kidneys
- The endocrine system
What is the primary function of the venous system?
Complete the circulation of the blood by returning blood from the capillaries to the right side of the heart
