The Uveal Tract Flashcards
What makes up The Uveal Tract?
Iris
Ciliary Body
Choroid
What is the iridocorneal angle and what is its clinical relevance?
Angle created by root of iris and the ciliary body and trabecular meshwork
Aqueous humour passes through here and if there is a closure of the angle, you get acute glaucoma which is a medical emergency
What is mydriasis?
Pupillary dilation caused by sympathetic activation or low light
What muscle allows the pupil to dilate?
Dilator pupillae
What happens to the pupil in bright light?
Miosis - constricts
What allows the pupil to constrict?
Sphincter pupillae
What innervates sphincter pupillae?
Parasympathetic fibres that hitchhike the occulomotor nerve (CNIII)
Name an antimuscarinic and its effect
Tropicaminde
Mydriasis
Name a sympathomimetic and its effect
Phenylephrine
Mydriasis
Name a muscarinic agonist and its effect
Pilocarpine
Miosis
What happens to the sphincter pupillae with age?
Becomes fibrostic
What happens to the dilator pupillae with age?
Becomes atrophic
What is the overall effect on the pupil size with age?
Miosis
