The use of psychological formulation Flashcards
What is the aim of psychological formulation
to understand a persons dificulties by construction an individual summary of a persons life to try and reduce reoffending
What are some examples of a persons dificulties
Relationships
Biological circumstances
Social circumstances
What factor is the treatment given to offenders based on
The formulation - the persons areas of life seen to need more support
Phase 1: offence analysis
what happens in this phase
analysis of the offence to gain an insight into the motivation for the offence.
may be difficult as there could be many complex reasons for the crime
this allows assessment of risk of reoffending and what possible causes can be removed.
Phase 2: Understanding the function of offending
Understanding the function - knowing the purpose it serves the individual - is revealed by offence analysis
for some offenders crime is like an addiction, they use it to fulfill a craving
Phase 3: Application treatment
end goal is to establoish some form of intervention based on conclusions drawn.
The rehabilitation program should reflect how the offence started in the first place and how likely they are to reoffend.
Evaluation: Weakness ‘willingness’
Relies of the offender remembering all the information about his past and the offence, aso his willingness to share it.
In this case an an accurate formulation will be hard to get and the treatment may not be suitable
Evaluation: weakness ‘difficult to measure success’
Difficult to measure success as some crime is not reported. So after undergoing psychological formulation they may still commit crimes but not be caught
In reality this method measures reconviction rates
Evaluation: strength ‘reducing offending’
Understanding the causes of effending will be helpful in reducing reoffending as it tackles offending at it’s source.
It educates the offender as to why they committed the crime, this will help reduce future reoffending
