How did the laws make it hard for African Americans to vote?

A

Example: it was law in some states that voters had to show that their grandparents had voted - this excluded African Americans as their ancestors were slaves with no voting rights.

A

‘Jim Crow Laws’ they were more common in the southern states.

How did the laws use segregation?

A

Forced white and African American people to use separate facilities - schools, transport, parks, cafés and theatres. Although facilities meant to be ‘separate but equal’ African Americans usually much worse.

Talk about the ‘monkey trial’

A

In 1925 a teacher called John Scopes was arrested for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution - against Tennessee state law. Chosen to take stand against law, defence was that law broke US constitutional amendments on free speech and separation of church and state. Found guilty but made law look very foolish.
