What happened to radio?
It boomed. In 1921 only one station.. Two years later 508. NBC set up in 1926, 1929 made 150m from advertising
What happened to the film industry?
It became the essential mass entertainment - a multi million industry. cinemas could house 4000 people. Hollywood centre.
How did manners change?
Young people enjoyed smoking, dancing and cocktail parties. Women started to wear lipstick, shorter skirts and high heels (flappers)
How did morals change?
Church attendance fell and divorce rate increased
Many felt permissiveness and sexual freedom gone too far
How did women gain more freedom and independence
Films, songs and books encourages new fashions and freedoms
Feminists encouraged liberation
Encouraged to gain economic independence
Household gadgets relief from domestic drudgery
Women better educated at high school and college
How did traditional views continue?
Some books and magazines tried to set decent standard
Women still expected to be homemakers
Discrimination against women in employment
Working women in low skilled and paid jobs
Men still seen as superior
