The Universe - Part 1 Flashcards
What is gravity?
Gravity is a force of attraction between two objects
What does gravity help us do?
It keeps planet in orbit around the sun, keeps us on earth
What does Vector mean?
Anything that has both a Magnitude and Direction
What are some examples of Vectors?
- Forces
- Velocity
- Weight
What does Scalar mean?
Anything that has on magnitude (how big the amount is)
What are some examples of scalar?
Mass, length, speed, distance
What is the Magnitude?
The magnitude of a Vector is just the numerical size
What is Centripetal force?
Centripetal force is the name given to any force which causes a change in direction of velocity toward the center of the circular motion
What is Centripetal force in relation to our earth?
The gravitational attraction of the Sun is an inward (centripetal) force acting on Earth.
What is Centripetal Acceleration?
Centripetal Acceleration, the acceleration of a body traversing a circular path.
What is Centripetal Acceleration in relation to Earth and Sun
It is the force pulling earth away from the sun that keeps it orbiting the sun
What is a light year
A light year is the distance light travels in one year
How can we observe things in the past?
The distance in light years to an object is equal to the number of years in the past we can observe it.
