The Universe - Doppler Effect and Redshift Flashcards
What is the doppler effect?
Waves are observed to be stretched out when they are emitted by an object moving away from the observer.
What wavelength has the largest length?
Red light has longer wavelengths than other visible light.
How does the absorption spectra effect redshift?
The observed light spectrum from a star show blanks in the light wavelength absorbed by the gas that surround them
How are the dark bands shifted on the absorption spectra?
The darks bands on absorption spectra from stars in distant galaxies are observed to be shifted to the red end of the light spectrum.
What does the shift towards the red end indicate?
It indicated that the light waves are stretching out and therefore the stars are moving away from earth.
