The Universe Flashcards
What is the Big Bang?
Since all matter and energy was very small, this major explosion, (the Big Bang) caused matter to regroup.
After matter regrouped, what started forming? (Name 2 things)
1-Planets
2-Galaxies
What are galaxies made up of? (Name 3 things)
1-Stars
2-Planets
3-Moons
What is our galaxy?
The milky way.
What is our closest star?
The sun.
Can we see all the stars in our galaxy?
No, we can only see a small fraction of the stars with the naked eye.
How do meteoroids ignite?
It ignites in the searing friction of the upper atmosphere which causes most of them to destroy.
What measurements of units do we use for our solar system?
Astronomical units.
What measurements do we use to measure things beyond our solar system?
Light-years.
What’s the habitable zone?
The distance planets need to orbit around a sun.
The sun produces enough energy to do what?
To allow life to develop on Earth.
What protects us from solar radiation?
The Earth’s atmosphere.
What’s a fossil?
A preserved imprint or remain of a plant or animal that existed in a past geological age.
What is petrified wood?
It’s a type of fossil where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals.
Why would soft tissues not often show up in a fossil?
Because bacteria would eat them up, which would cause it to decay.
