The Origins of Life Flashcards
What’s Aristotle’s theory?
That everything was created by god.
Who tried to prove Aristotle wrong?
Louis Pasteur.
What did Louis Pateur do to prove him wrong?
He gave proof that all bacteria, even the invisible ones, came from parents resembling them.
What did Miller do?
He took molecules which he believed represented major components of the early Earth’s atmosphere and put them in a closed system.
What did Miller find in his experiment? (Name 2 things)
1-An important organic compound essential to DNA
2-Amino Acids
What gas was not on the Earth a long time ago? (There was ammonia, hydrogen, water, and methane).
There was no oxygen.
What is one of the first organisms and where were they?
Cyanobacteria and they were in the oceans.
What 2 things was cyanobacteria safe from?
1-UV rays
2-Predators
What was the only thing that cyanobacteria did?
Reproduction.
Since they multiplied so quickly over the years, and they were all doing ___________, it released oxygen into the world.
Photosynthesis.
Since there was so much oxygen, what did it cause?
It caused other living organisms to develop and come out of the water.;
According to Charles Darwin, how do individuals have a better chance at survival?
Ones that can adapt to changing environments.
What’s natural selection?
The evolution from simple organisms to complex ones.
What is pasteurization?
It’s the partial sterilization of liquids which destroys disease-causing bacteria.
Who discovered pasteurization?
Louis Pasteur.
