Bleeding Kansas
The Civil War in KS in 1865 following the sack of Lawrence and the massacre at Pottawatomie Creek.
- Lawrence was a stronghold of anti-slavery and attacked by a mob
- Guerrilla warfare broke out when anti-slavery settlers began killing pro-slavery men
- Demonstrated competing visions of two separate cultures for the future destiny of the US- widening of gap between northern and southern interests
- *Foretaste of a civil war with deaths and property damage along with high emotion
Bleeding Sumner
• Charles Sumner delivered a speech in Congress- articulated disgust with the South for putting pro-Slavery people in Kansas
• Also included personal attack against Andrew P. Butler, who had a relative present- Preston Brooks
• Brooks beat Sumner over the head with his cane in the Senate
• Brooks resigned, but was elected back into office and became a hero in the South

Dred Scott Decision, 1857
Declared that slaves were not citizens and that the MO Compromise was unconstitutional
- Seen as a protection of southern rights to slavery
- Rights were very vague for African Americans after this decision
- Energized Republican party to continue their cause and increased sectional hostility
Lincoln-Douglas Debates 1858
- Lincoln’s strategy: make Douglas choose between popular sovereignty or supporting the SC
- Douglas’ strategy: put Lincoln on the defensive by accusing him of being to radical in his racial views
- Importance: put Lincoln on the map as a presidential contender, made him well known throughout the nation
John Brown’s Raid 1859
The attack on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry which was intended to inspire a slave uprising but resulted in the deaths of the attackers increasing tensions between northerners and southerners
Fort Sumter
Federal fort in Charleston, SC that Lincoln tried to re-supply. When Confederates resisted this effort, the Civil War began
Popular Sovereignty
Doctrine that the decision of whether to permit slavery in a territory be left to local legislature, offered as a peaceful solution to the question of slavery in the territories but was proven wrong by Bleeding Kansas
