The unconscious mind Flashcards
Freudian slip
You say something with accidentally reveals your unconscious desires. They are often seen as sexual, violent or unacceptable. For example, “Let’s get some sex from the shop.” instead of “Let’s get some eggs from the shop.”
Levels of consciousness
Conscious - What we are aware of (logical and rational thinking).
Preconscious - What we could be conscious of if we turned our attention (similar to memories)
Unconscious - Cannot be directly accessed - where our repressed thoughts go and come out through things like word association.
Ego defence mechanisms
Displacement - Transfer of impulses from one object or person to another.
Projection - Project thoughts you have about yourself on other people.
Repression - Forgetting things, usually traumatic.
