The UK Flashcards
Does continentality affect the UK?

Does altitude affect the UK?
Yes - the UK has several mountain ranges where temperatures will be lower
What is an air mass?
A volume of air defined by it’s temperature & water vapour content. They adapt to the characteristics of the surface below them.
What are three factors that air masses can depend on?
- Jet stream
- Gulf stream
- Mvmt of the thermal equator
What air mass comes from the North?
Arctic maritime
- cold air, snow, little seasonal variation
What air mass comes from the North-West?
Polar maritime
- wet & cold, no seasonal variation
What air mass comes from the South-West?
Tropical maritime
- mild and wet
What air mass comes from the South-East?
Tropical continental
- hot and dry
What air mass comes from the North-East?
Polar continental
- cold and dry
Why does the UK get high precipitation? (four reasons)
- Winds blow west across the Atlantic and pick up moisture and dump it on UK
- Susceptible to weather systems from both the east and the west
- Lots of hills - orographic rainfall
- Located at the meeting point of warm and cold air masses - frontal rainfall
