the truman doctrine and marshall plan Flashcards
on march 12 1947, what did Truman announce in his speech to the US Congress?
he announced a $400 million aid package to Greece and Turkey and wanted to ‘‘help free people’’, ‘‘maintain their free institutions’’, ‘‘against aggressive movements’’ (indirect hate towards communism)
what was the truman doctrine?
it was America’s way of pledging their support, money, advice and equipment to any country they felt was under threat to outside takeover
what was truman’s new aim once he’d accepted that Eastern Europe has become communist?
instead of reclaiming them for democracy, it was to stop any further spread of communism (containment)
why was the USA in a good position to give economic support to Europe?
because they hadn’t suffered much damage to their mainland and industry in WW2
who came up with the Europe recovery plan?
George C Marshall (would begin in 1948)
what actually was the Marshall Plan?
(1) give financial aid to help countries who needed it
(2) allow them to build up their industry and fix their economies
(3) and in doing so, prevent them from wanting to turn to communism as a support mechanism
how much more aid did the USA eventually provide?
between 1948 and 1951. USA provided some $13 billion of aid in the form of money, fuel, food and machinery to Europe (in doing this, there was some self-interest since these new markets and money flow could increase demand for US exports)
how much did countries receiving Marshall Aid grow?
by at least 25%
how did Stalin’s mistrust of the USA grow?
he now saw the USA as expanding its influence throughout Europe and establishing itself as ‘protector of the world’
what did Stalin nickname the USA’s strategy?
Dollar Imperialism
why did Stalin call the USA’s strategy ‘Dollar Imperialism’?
because he viewed it as America’s way of buying itself support and creating an economic empire with the countries of Europe under their control
as a result of disliking the USA’s plan, what did Stalin do?
he banned some European countries (e.g. Poland and Czechoslovakia) from applying for Marshall Aid
