- The Father, Son and Holy spirit are three distinct persons.
- Each “person” is fully god;Coequal, coeternal and coexistant.
- There is only one God.

Adoptionism-jesus only became God after he waas baptised.
Arianism-Jesus, althoiugh being the highest of all creatures, is not made of the same substance as God.
Sabellianism-Jesus was divine but not Human.
What are some biblical references to the trintiy?
First hebrew word for God is plurall
In matthew the disciplkes are sent to baptise in the name of the fatehr son and holy spirit.
Which churches reject the trinity
Not very many but the unitarian chuirch preaches that Jesus was only human and not God.
What is the filioque controversy?
In 589 at the council of Toledo, a clause was added to the nicene creed that the holy spirit proceeded from the Father and the Son, rather than just the Father. This was added without the consent of the 5 patriarchs of the Christian Church This iodea became popular in the Latin speaking western half of the Roman empire, but not the greek speaking east, and was one of the contributing factors to the schism of 1054.
What are the Western and Eastern church views on the economic and immanent trinities
Western-The immanent trinity can be discovered through the economic trinity-ideas of St Augustine. This is because of Augustines argument that humans can know the trinity from their own experience as there are traces of the trinity within the human psyche. Augustine doesnt even differentiate between the economic and immanent trinities.
Eastern- Augustine unacceptable, humans cannot base their interpretation trinity off of their own experiences. The trinity is incomprehensible to humans, and so the economic and immanent trinities are different.
Which moodern scholar is important in terms of the Trinity?
Karl Barth
What was Schleiermacher’s(An enlightenment philospher) evaluation of the Trinity
He dismissed it in a 14 page appendix to his 800 page theological work “The Christian Faith”
For Barth, what is the basis of the doctrine of the Trintiy
The Son is an objective unveiling of what God is, whilst the spirit is the subjective personal reception or unveiling of what God is. E.g. tweo men are watching Jesus be crucified, one recognizees a criminal being killed, the other recognizes the son of god dying for mans sins as he has had the subjective revelation from the spirit.
What is Barths opinion on the subjective and immanent trinity?
They are one and the same as we can find out about God and the trinity through his actions
What are some problems with developments of the trinity?
In the eastern church mergin the economic and immanent trinity is a heresy
Issues over whether Barths interpretation means that the trinity exist one after another, not coexisting, destroying the unity of the godhead.
however, the western church has accepted the mering of the trnities for centuries, and Barth specifies that its modes of being “seinsweise” rather than person to avoid confusing with personality, as its 3 modes of being but one personality.

how does Barth distinguish the Father from the Son
He refers to the son as logos asarkos (The word without flesh)
he makes lots of distinctions between Son of God(the word) and Son of Man,
