The Trinity Flashcards
How is the Trinity present at Creation?
Spirit brooded over the water, (Genesis 1:2) the voice of God (Jesus) spoke, and God created the world
What is the formula of the meeting in Nicea, 325?
Jesus is fully divine, begotten of God. God is one Being in three persons.
Arius
- Jesus was not fully divine, so he was created (not begotten) of God
- Jesus was closer to God than other humans, but not fully God
- Jesus was homoiousios with the Father - similar substance
Athanasius of Alexander
- Jesus was fully human AND fully divine, so He was created (not begotten) of God
- He is the same substance of the Father - homoousios
What are some concerns, from Arius’s perspective?
He worried about God getting His divine hands dirty by becoming human - He wanted to keep God safe from impurity
What are some concerns, from Athanasius’s perspective?
He was concerned about salvation - If Jesus was not fully divine, then he couldn’t save the human race. Only God can save.
What is the Trinitarian controversy
Jesus is fully human and divine, so He is a member of the Trinity
