They were thought to be extremely fair. Some would have said too fair.
What were th terms of the treaty of Limerick?
Catholics had 3 options:
Fight in William’s army
Go to France and fight in James’ army
Go home peacefully
What were the main terms of the penal laws?
Archbishops had to leave the country, priests couldn’t be replaced when they died, the only service presbyterians could hold were weddings, Catholics couldn’t go to university or abroad to be educated, catholics couldn’t vote, catholics and presbyterians couldn’t het jobs, Catholics couldn’t be MPs, presbyterians couldn’t be on town council, Catholics couldn’t buy land from Protestants, a Protestant son could steal his father’s land, If a father died his land would be split equally between his sons and Catholics and Presbyterians had to oay taxes to the church of Ireland.
How were the Penal Laws justified?
Catholics were never tolerant, they can turn protestant, Spain France and Italy, they’re enemies of the throne, they acted the same in England, catholics would oppress them, they had a chance to go to France, the Catholics lost the war, siege of Derry, the treaty of Limerick was too soft.
