After World War II Hungary fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and elections were tightly controlled to ensure communists came to power
What was the process de-Stalinisation ?
After Stalin’s death in February 1956, new soviet leader Khrushchev criticised Stalin’s brutality and suggested a more open and peaceful approach from the government. This was known as de-Stalinisation

on the 23rd of October 1956 students took to the streets of the Hungarian capital Budapest. They issued a list of demands that included
- greater freedoms and civil rights
- The removal of a Rákosi and the return of the exiled Imre Nagy, a Communist who supported reform
- the withdrawal of soviet troops
What was ‘A new Hungary’?
With Soviet tanks being gone, and Nagy as a prime minister it was seemed that life in the country would improve

On the 1st of November in 1956 he had announced that Hungary was now an independent and neutral country

The America said that it was a weather plan that had strayed into the Soviet territory but the Soviet union didn’t believe that
