What does Capitalism mean?
Where all factors of production (industry, business and agriculture) are owned by private individuals or firms who run them for their own profit.
When it says ‘west’ in a question it means a capitalist country but what those capitalism country’s?
USA, Europe - Britain France etc
What was The Yalta Conference?
The Yalta Conference was in 1945, it was held in Ukraine, it was to plan what would happen to Europe after Germany.
What were the agreements in Yalta Conference?
> the big three agreed to hunt down and punish was criminals who were responsible for the war.
the agreed that Germany would be divided into four zones.
Stalin agreed to enter the war against Japan once Germany surrendered.
the big three agreed that Eastern Europe should be seen as ‘a Soviet Sphere of Influence’
What does communism mean?
Where all factors of production (industry, business and agriculture) are owned by the state for the good of everyone.
What were the disagreement at the Yalta conference?
> the disagreement was only about Poland. Stalin wanted the border of USSR to move westwards into Poland.
Roosevelt and Churchill disagreed with this plan of Stalin, just along the USSR agreed not to interfere about Greece (where the British were trying to stop Communist from taking over)
Why did the relations between the USA and USSR worsen after Yalta?
America had a new president Harry Truman, he was more of an anti-communism than Roosevelt and that he had been soft of the communist USSR.
Britain had a new prime minister Clement Atlee, who wanted to focus on England more than the rest of the world.
What were the outcomes at Potsdam?

Lot more disagreement than the last time
The big three, disagreed over what to do about Germany - Stalin wanted to protect the USSR against future threats. Truman didn’t want to repeat he mistakes of the treaty of Versailles
Germany would be divided up into 4 parts, this was talked about at Yalta but agreed in Potsdam.
The disagreed over the reparations 20 million people died in the Soviet army and wanted compensation from Germany.

The causes of the Cold War?
1) The tension began to rise between the allies as they were both the big powers and USA and USSR were getting more weapons
2) The USA got involved in Greece because they didn’t want to have another Communist country and Britain didn’t have any money or weapons to get involved.
3) The Truman Doctrine
What is the Truman Doctrine?
The Truman Doctrine, America was prepared to send money, weapons, equipment or advice to any country which is thought to be threatened by a communist take over.
What does coalition mean?
A temporary friendship/alliance. It usually refers to different political parties joining together to form a government
What is the Germany Democratic Republic?
The official name for the sector of Germany that was controlled by the USSR after WW2 until 1990. It was usually called East Germany.
What was the Marshall Plan?
Marshall suggested that about £17 billion would be needed to rebuild Europe. ‘Our policy’ he said ‘is directed against hunger, poverty, desperation and chaos’ most countries were still rationing bread. Truman believed the communism succeeded when people faced poverty and hardship.
