The Temporal Lobe: Anatomy Flashcards
What are the 3 major gyri?
- Superior Temporal Gyrus
- Middle Temporal Gyrus
- Inferior Temporal Gyrus
Where are the 3 major gyri visible?
The lateral surface of the temporal lobe.
Where are the auditory and visual areas located?
Within the brodmann’s areas on the lateral surface.
Apart from the lateral view how is the temporal-lobe gyri also visible?
In the medial view.
What does the medial temporal lobe include?
The pyriform cortex, the uncus and extensions of the hippocampal formation.
What does the superior temporal sulcus (STS) do?
Separates the superior and middle temporal gyri and houses a significant amounts neocortex as well.
What are the 2 subdivisions of the temporal cortex?
- Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS)
- Temporal-Parietal Junction (TPJ)
What is the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) linked to?
Attention, memory, language and social processing
What are the 6 connections of the temporal cortex?
- A sensory pathway
- A dorsal auditory pathway
- A polymodal pathway
- A medial-temporal projection
- A frontal-lobe projection
- Olfactory projections
What is the sensory pathway responsible for?
Stimulus recognition
What is the dorsal auditory pathway responsible for?
Directing movements with respect to auditory information.
What is the polymodal pathway responsible for?
Stimulus categorisation
What is the medial-temporal projection important for?
Long-term memory
What is the frontal-lobe projection important for?
Movement control, short-term memory and affect
What are the olfactory projections related to?
Odour perception and memory
