Sharp teeth used to bite and cut food
What Is the function of the canines
Pointed teeth used to tear food
What is the function of the pre-molars
Double pointed teeth used to chew and grind food
What is the function of the molars
Large teeth used to chew and grind food
What does the tooth contain
Enamel Dentine Pulp cavity Cementum Periodontal fibres
What is enamel
A hard substance thet protects the tooth
What is dentine
A bone like substance softer then enamel that is under the enamel
What is the pulp cavity
A space at the centre of the tooth which contains blood vessels and nerves
What is cementum
A layer around the root which holds the tooth in place in the jaw
What is the periodontal fibres
These hold the tooth in the bone
What is plaque
- Made up of food, saliva and bacteria
* builds up on the surface of the teeth especially near the gums and between the teeth
What is tartar
- hardened plaque
* stains the teeth
What happens if plaque or tartar I’d not removed
If not removes acids are produced which attack the enamel of the tooth (tooth decay)
