21
Q

What happens to subsoil when it rains

A

nutrients from the topsoil are washed down into the subsoil

22
Q

Can plants get nutrients from subsoil

A

Yes, however, it is not as nutrient rich and fertile as topsoil

23
Q

What is below subsoil

A

Broken pieces of rock mixed with some soil

24
Q

What is at the very bottom layer of the earths crust

A

Solid rock

25
Q

Does soil form in solid rock layer

A

Yes

26
Q

What are some ways that soil supports life on earth

A

It can be the habitat in which animals live (aardvark)

It provides plants with nutrients and water, plants then provide food for animals

27
Q

Which layer of soil do farmers plant seeds and why

A

Topsoil, because it is the most fertile

28
Q

How is topsoil formed

A

Rocks are naturally broken into smaller and smaller pieces over time. Dead plant and animal matter mixes the rock pieces - slowly forming topsoil

Water and air causes rock near the surface of the earth to weaken and crumble.
Plants roots growing in cracks of rocks help to widen cracks and break the rock into small pieces.

29
Q

How is subsoil formed

A

After topsoil is formed, the rock below begins to break as water, air and plant roots move down past the topsoil to reach it

30
Q

Define microscope

A

An instrument that makes smaller things appear much bigger

30
Q

Define coarse grains

A

Large soil grains

31
Q

Define humus

A

dark material in the soil made of the fully decomposed remains of plants and animals

32
Q

Define fine soil grains

A

very small soil grans

32
Q

Define soil grains

A

small pieces of broken rock

32
Q

define eroded soil

A

soil that has been washed away by water and blown away by wind

33
Q

What are very small grains called

A

Clay grains

33
Q

What are large grains called

A

Sand grains

34
Q

What is clayey soil

A

Soil that has more fine grains than coarse grains of sand. If feels smooth when rubbed between fingers. It can feel sticky and hold a shape when wet

35
Q

How is humus formed

A

When plant and animal decompose fully. the compost turns into humus

36
Q

What does humus do for loamy soil

A

makes loamy light and nutrient rich. Making plants grow best in the loamy soil

37
Q
A
37
Q

How small are clay grains

A

Can only be seen under a microscope

38
Q
A
39
Q

What is sandy soil

A

Soil in which there are more coasre sand grains than fine grains. It feels gritty when you rub it between your fingers

39
Q

What is loamy soil

A

Soil that is a mixture of equal amount clay, sand and other soil grans. It contains humus.
