What does ‘zero the desk’ mean?
Placing all faders, except the one which is live to air in the ‘off’ position
What is acoustics?
Achieving the correct balance between direct and reflected sound
What are the 3 basic console functions?
- To select a ‘signal’ to input into the console
- To amplify these incoming signals to an appropriate volume or level
- To direct these signals to any number of outputs: a recorder, transmitter or studio headphones
What is Stereo 1 & Stereo 2?
Stereo 1 is on air
Stereo 2 is off air
What is a Cue?
The cue position is to preview and cue up a sound source ready to begin immediately when the player is started
What is a VU meter?
A Volume Unit meter or peak meter, reads the average level of the loudness of the total program
What is the difference between dynamic and condenser microphones?
Dynamic mics don’t require power so are favoured for field recordings. Condenser (powered) mics give better frequency response, but more sensitive so the possibility for distortion or electric noise
What are the key differences between analogue and digital equipment?
Digital equipment is:
- non-linear
- non-destructive
- can be networked to other workstations
- can be pre-programmed
What is Voice-Tracking?
Voice-tracking is a method of prerecording within the computer for later replay
