the structure of the human lung and overall ventilation system Flashcards
What makes up the respiratory system?
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, intercostal muscles and diaphragm.
what is ventilation
The exchange of air between the lungs and the surroundings.
what is the trachea
The trachea is the long tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi.
What is the structure of the trachea
The trachea is 4 inches long.
The trachea divides into two smaller tubes called bronchi: one bronchus for each lung.
The trachea is made of 20 rings of tough cartilage.
What is the function of the trachea
the function of the trachea is to carry air in and out of lungs
what is the bronchi
The bronchi are the two large tubes that carry air from the trachea to the lungs.
What is the structure of the bronchi
two tubes that branch out
these tubes branch out into segments that look like tree branches.
What are the 2 functions of the bronchi?
bronchi carry air from the trachea to the lungs
The bronchi help moisturize the air you breathe and screen out foreign particles.
What is the trachea lined with
The trachea and its branches are lined with ciliated epithelium with goblet cells
what is the function of goblet cells
Goblet cells secrete mucus onto the lining of the trachea, to trap microorganisms
What are bronchioles
A tiny branch of air tubes divided from the bronchi
What is the structure of the bronchioles
The smaller bronchioles have no cartilage rings.
The walls of the bronchioles contain smooth muscle and elastic fibres
What is the function of the bronchioles
the bronchioles carry air to the alveoli
How does air travel through the ventilation system
Air is inhaled through the nose and mouth and travels down the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles.
These are airways that allow the passage of air into the lungs and out again.
