Q

Why is the heart made of two adjacent pumps?

A

-One pump has high pressure blood and one pump has low pressure blood
-This is more efficient than one pump, as blood can be oxygenated whilst simultaneously being pumped to the body as opposed to having varying pressures in one circuit (Which would cause blood flow to the rest of the body to be very slow)

Q

How is the structure of the heart related to its functions?

A

=Aorta
-Carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body except the lungs

=Vena Cava
-Returns deoxygenated blood back to the tissues of the body

=Pulmonary artery
-Connected to right ventricle and carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs

=Pulmonary vein
-Returns oxygenated blood to the heart in order to pumped out of the aorta

=Coronary arteries
-Supply the heart muscle with oxygen (Branch off of aorta)
-If blocked can lead to a myocardial infarction (Heart attack)
