Circulatory System of a Mammal Flashcards
Why do large organisms move substances around their bodies?
-Large organisms have a high surface area to volume ratio
-This results in them needing to be able to transport essential substances from exchange surfaces to cells and vice versa
-Whether or not there is a specialised transport system depends on: (1) the surface area to volume ratio (2) the activity of the organism
What are the features of the transport systems of large organisms?
-A suitable medium t carry materials in (e.g. blood)
-A form of mass transport in which the transport medium is moved in bulk over large distances (e.g. diffusion)
-A closed system of tubular vessels containing the transport medium and distribution system
-A mechanism for moving the transport system within vessels
What is the circulatory system of mammals like?
Mammals have a closed, double circulatory system.
