The Structure Of Personality Flashcards
What does the structure of personality consist of?
According to freud, the structure of personality consists of the id, ego and superego. These three parts correspond to desire, reason and conscience.
Id
The is filled with primitive urges such as bodily needs, sexual and aggressive impulses. It is unconscious and works on pleasure principle.
Pleasure principle
Id operates on this. According to this principle, immediate pleasure is the sole motivation for behaviour regardless of the cost.
Ego
Acting solely on id puts a person in trouble and negative consequences. So he develops an ego. The ego puts the id in check, and only lets a person act on impulses if the external conditions allow. The ego works on the reality principle.
Reality principle
The ego operates according to this principle, which takes into consideration external conditions, and the consequences of behaving in accordance to the id’s impulses.
