Levels Of Consciousness Flashcards
What is the idea of levels of consciousness?
Freud believed that the human mind has three levels.
- conscious, preconscious, and unconscious.
These levels are aligned with the structure of personality
- ego, superego and id.
Conscious
Conscious includes current thoughts and perceptions of objects and thoughts in the moment.
The ego operates in this realm.
Preconscious
It is deeper than the conscious level.
It consists of memories that can be brought to mind when it is needed by recollection.
The superego works in this realm.
Unconscious
It is pressed beneath the preconscious mind.
According to freud it is the bulk of the human mind.
It consists of thoughts, desires and impulses and memories the conscious mind is not aware of.
(Shameful experiences or socially unacceptable urges)
-active repression
-anxeity
The unconscious mind largely affects our behaviour and motives behind them.
Active repression and anxiety
Freud believes that unconscious material has once been conscious but has been actively repressed because of the anxiety it induces.
Psychoanalysis
It is a method of therapy by which psychological disorders and disturbances are treated. The therapist attempts to bring back unconscious memories and thoughts to the surface to gain insight into early life experiences.
