the structure and function of blood vessels Flashcards
what are the three blood vessels
veins, capillaries and arteries
describe the route the blood takes through the body
blood circulates from the heart to the arteries to capillaries then to veins and back to the heart
describe the effect the route blood takes on blood pressure
leaves the heart in arteries under high pressure and returns to heart in veins at low pressure
describe the structure and function of arteries
carry blood away from heart at a high pressure
outer wall of elastic fibers and inner wall of smooth muscle with some elastic fibers and a relatively narrow lumen
explain vasoconstriction
smooth muscle in arteries contracts causing a decrease in blood flow into capillaries
explain vasodilation
smooth muscle surrounding arteries relaxes causing an increase in blood flow into capillaries
explain how materials are exchanged between tissue fluid and cells
capillaries are found in capillary beds which run through cells of body tissues. blood is at a high pressure which causes pressure filtration to occur. this results in capillaries exuding plasma which becomes tissue fluif that bathes the cells and supplies them with glucose and oxygen.
explain the function of the lymphatic vessels
excess fluid that does not return back to the blood during pressure filtration enters the lymphatic vessels as lymph which returns to the circulatory system
