What is the structural approach?
The belief that societies institutions shape individuals.
What does consensus mean?
There is general agreement over things i.e norms and values.
What is a conflict view?
The stance that there is inequality between certain groups of society. (Marxists believe that the conflict is between people of different classes whilst feminists believe the conflict is between people of different genders)
Who have the structural consensus view?
Functionalists,
Functionalists believe that societies institutions serve to shape individuals and create a functioning society by teaching individuals of norms and values that we all share (i.e the family is an institution that severs society by socialising youngsters)
Who have a structural conflict view?
Marxists and Feminists,
Both of which believe that although society’s institutions determine the behaviour of individuals, this occurs due to unequal relationships and exploitation with society (Feminists believe this is between males and females, Marxists believe this is between The Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat.)
What does Bourgeoisie mean and which sociological approach uses it the most in their argument?
Bourgeoisie means “ruling class”, and is a Marxist term.
Who are the Proletariat?
According to Marxists, these are the people who are exploited by Bourgeoisie (Ruling Class) and benefit the least from capitalism.
What do Feminists believe causes inequalities between men and women within society?
Patriarchy.
Feminists believe that Patriarchy (Male domination) is the cause of the inequalities between males and females in society.
What is the “Superstructure” in Marxism?
The superstructure is the name given to the institutions (i.e The Family, Justice System, Religion, Media and Education) which Marxists believe serve to transmit Bourgeoisie ideologies.
What is ‘False Class Consciousness’?
The Marxist belief that Proletariats (the working class) are unaware that they are being exploited by the bourgeoisie (The ruling class).
