The Stress response Flashcards
what is stress
a physical and psychological response when a person feels like they can’t cope with a stressor (stimulus produces stress response in a person)
what happens when we’re stressed
the Sympathetic Nervous System (part of the Autonomic Nervous System) kicks in preparing for fight of flight.
it shuts down non-essential body functions and enhances essential functions
what happens after stress subsides
the Parasympathetic Nervous System restores body to testing level at a slow rate that may take several minutes
what happens to organs in Sympathetic Nervous System activation (6)
• Slows digestion
• stops saliva production
• increased heart rate
• relaxes bladder (stimulates urination)
• dilated pupils
• dilated bronchi
what happens in Parasympathetic Nervous System activation
• increased digestion
• increased saliva production
• decreases heart rate
• contracts bladder (stopping urination)
• constricts pupils
• constricts bronchi
what organs are affected during fight or flight
Stomach/gut, Saliva glands, Heart, Bladder, Eyes, Lungs
what happens during fight or flight
Hypothalamus triggers Sympathetic Nervous System, signal sent to the Adrenal Gland, producing Adrenaline, stimulating Bodily Changes.
When Stressor Subsides the Parasympathetic Nervous System restores the body to resting
