The Standard Model 5 Flashcards
If 2 waves are coherent what will they have
Constant phase difference - same wavelength and frequency
When are 2 waves exactly in phase
When crest meets crest
When are 2 waves exactly out of phase
When crest meets trough
What is constructive interference
If the crest of one wave meets the rest of another and they add together ( same wavelength & amplitude is doubled - only doubled if waves are exactly the same - )
What is destructive interference
If the crests of one wave meet the troughs of another and they cancel each other out ( waves completely destroy each other if they are exactly the same. If they are different amplitude will be smaller)
What is another name for constructive interference
Maxima
What is another name for destructive interference
Minima
What is a diffraction grating
A diffraction gating is a sheet of plastic with many slits cut into it and this causes an interference pattern when light is passed through it
What does increasing the wavelength do to the angle of separation
Increases it
What does decreasing the wavelength do to the angle of separation
Decreases it
What colour of light diffracts the most
Red
What colour of light diffracts the least
Violet
What colour of light refracts the most
