The Standard Model 2 Flashcards
What are electric fields
An electric field is an area where a charged particle experiences force and the lines show how a positively charged particle would move in the field and the closer the lines are together the stronger the fields
What is a uniform electric field
A uniform electric field has the same field strength everywhere in the field and the lines are equally spaced in a uniform field
When is work done in a uniform electric field
Work is done when moving a charged particle in a uniform field and a charged particle can gain electrical potential energy by moving it through the field
What is a volt defined as
On joule per coloumb
Alpha particle
Helium nucleus (2 protons , 2 neutrons) : +2 charge
Beta particle
Fast moving electron : -1 charge
Neutron particle
0 charge
Explain Magnetic fields in magnets
Magnets have a north and South Pole and produce a magnetic field and the lines always point from north to south
What re the 3 types of particle accelerators
- linear
- circular
- synchrotrons
Explain how linear accelerators work
- the particles pass through one tube the accelerate to the next tube. The particles spend the same time in each tube and therefore the tubes get longer since the articles that move through the get faster
Explain how cyclotron accelerators work
- the high frequency a.c. Supply is used to change the direction of the electron field acting since the particles change direction crossing the gap
