The Spine Flashcards
The spine is also referred to as…
The vertebral column
Functions of the spine
- Provide strength for the suspension and propulsion of bodyweight
- To provide attachment for the ribs
- To protect the spinal cord
What components is the spine made up of?
A string of incompressible bony vertebrae separated by slightly compressible cartilaginous disks HOWEVER there are no disks between the joints of the atlas and axis
What is the function of the Cervical?
They have reduced spinious processes to allow for the wide range of movement required by the neck
What is the function of the thoracic vertebrae?
The ribs attach to them as they are only capable of limited movement, there are 18 pairs of ribs (true ribs) which attach directly to the sternum. The other 10 pairs (false ribs) attach by means of cartilaginous extensions.
What is the function of the Lumbar vertebrae?
The loin muscles attach to the lumbar vertebrae which have very rigid, well definied processes. The forward thrust of the hind legs is transferred to the body through these vertebrae.
What is the function of the sacral vertebrae?
The five sacral vertebrae are fused together to form the sacrum, the sacroiliac joints have a basic capacity for shock absorption.
What is the function of the coccygeal vertebrae?
They form the tail, they are very small with reduced processes as they are not subjected to any strong muscular tensions.
